If your insurer has asked for a "Thatcham approved tracker", it's probably asked for a specific category: S5 or S7. Here's the difference.
S7: stolen vehicle tracking
An S7 tracker locates and helps recover a stolen vehicle. It's monitored, so if the car's taken, its location can be passed to the police for recovery.
S5: tracking plus driver recognition
An S5 does everything an S7 does, and adds driver recognition, usually a small card or a phone app that has to be with the car. If someone tries to drive away without it, the system alerts, and the engine can be immobilised. That makes S5 the stronger option against keyless theft and stolen keys.
Which one do you need?
Check your insurance documents. If your policy names a category, that's the one to fit.
| S7 | S5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Locates and helps recover a stolen vehicle | Yes | Yes |
| Driver recognition (card or phone app) | No | Yes |
| Insurers often ask for it on | Other vehicles | Higher-value or high-risk vehicles |
